 Music

Key Stage 3

All girls in Years 7-9 receive at least one lesson of timetabled Music each week. A new topic is started each half term. During each topic, girls will learn to develop their practical music skills as well as increase their knowledge of the rudiments of Music.

In class, girls Compose, Perform, Listen and Appraise. To assist in learning, students use electronic keyboards, tuned percussion instruments, sing, clap rhythms. Each topic ends with a solo or paired performance of the main piece of Music which has been worked on (see assessment below).

For those who wish to pursue their interests further, instrumental lessons are taught at the school, provided by Bromley Youth Music Trust (BYMT).

In addition, lunchtime clubs available to join are Choir, Keyboard Club, Junior Band and Senior Ensemble. 

Key Stage 4

Girls can opt for GCSE Music at Years 10 and 11. This involves three lessons per week each year.

To study GCSE Music you must be able to either play an instrument at least to a reasonable standard or sing.

Throughout the course, you will perform and record pieces on your main instrument, compose pieces of music in different styles and learn about different areas of study in Music as well as learn important musical terminology.

The areas of study are World Music, Popular Music and Western Classical Traditions.

Candidates are expected to have a general interest in Music and a desire to want to improve their skills.

All students are expected to participate in at least one lunchtime Music club.

Key Stage 5

Music can be studied at AS Level in Year 12, leading on to A2 in Year 13.

To begin the course, students must have at least a Grade C in GCSE Music or must have successfully passed Grade 5 on their main instrument.

Students study three units at AS Level. These are Performing, Developing Musical Ideas and Listening & Understanding. This involves performing pieces of at least Grade 5 difficulty, composing a piece of extended Music and learning about two different genres of Music in detail.

Successfully passing AS Music can lead to A2, where three further units are studied. These are Performance Recital OR Composing Portfolio, Composing & Performing and Analysing Music.

All students are expected to participate in at least one lunchtime Music club.
