 Art and Design

The Art Department is a successful and flourishing part of Beaverwood School. We offer a range of exciting opportunities to develop creative skills and abilities.

KS3

Students are taught the the visual elements of Art through stimulating and challenging projects using a range of media.  There are a number of extra-curricular clubs including Stop-Motion animation, Photography club and a Gifted and Talented club to stretch the more able.

We encourage our students to:

  • Show creativity, take risks and learn from mistakes
  • Explore and experiment with ideas, materials, tools and techniques
  • Develop skills by working from first hand observation, secondary resources and imagination
  • Engage with Art and Crafts from a range of different cultures
  • Analyse and reflect on their own and other's work

KS4

Art is an oversubscribed subject for GCSE. Students develop their skills while trying out new ways of working, including photography, print-making and sculpture. A range of traditional and contemporary artists and craftspeople are examined and we encourage the students to develop their strengths and take risks in their work.

The final GCSE mark is made from the 40% exam and 60% coursework. Students are given regular feedback during lessons and in their sketchbooks which enables them to achieve excellent grades.

KS5 - Fine Art

Fine Art is a popular option for A-Level. Students study 'The Body and Identity' as the first unit and then work independently on the exam unit. They are provided with a wide range of opportunities to stimulate and encourage their independent practice, for example, life drawing workshops, a Paris study visit, University open days and many gallery visits. The majority of our students go on to further education to study Art related subjects at University.

Art Photography

Art Photography is a new and exciting subject at Beaverwood School. Students learn how to use a DSLR camera and PhotoShop techniques. They then work independently on the 'Reflections' project with one-on-one guidance on techniques and ideas. Students are encouraged to express their ideas creatively and experiment with techniques while referring to the work of Photographers.

Art Textiles

Art Textiles is a creative and experimental subject where students explore a range of textile media, techniques and processes. Students are encouraged to combining techniques to produce exciting outcomes and look at the work of contemporary designers for inspiration. Previous outcomes have included corsets, experimental texile banners and embroidered chairs.
